Virtual School Tour Week - 2nd Class

6th Jun 2020

Virtual School Tour Week!

Hi girls,  thank you so much for the photos and emails this week.  It was great to hear from you !  Just a quick note about the homework diary covers.  Please put your cover in a safe place so that you will have it for going back to school in September.  Enjoy your virtual school tour week !  It's such a pity we won't be able to get to Fota together as a class but hopefully the activities below will be fun and exciting!  Don't forget, in the envelope I posted you, you will find some mindful colouring of a lovely giraffe to complete this week along with two word searches and an animal factfile should you wish to research your favourite animal !  Perhaps you might send me some photos of your virtual school tour activities !  I will post them on the class webpage for your classmates to see !

There are so many beautiful giraffes in Fota !

Here is some classical music by the composer, Camille Saint-Saens.  You will hear piano, xylophone, string instruments, clarinet and flute.  The composer uses the various instruments to portray the different animals he likes.  Have a listen whilst you are doing your Giraffe mindful colouring!

Our nearest Panda is Yang Guang in Edinburgh Zoo !

Minibeasts!

The main reason we need insects is because they pollinate plants and if we didn’t have them then 80% of all the plants we use for food would disappear. So insects are super important to the planet.

It is essential that we stop using poisonous sprays on our crops and instead encourage a balance of insects to do the work for us.

Girls, there are all sorts of minibeasts in our gardens.  We've been out bug hunting here at home and I took some close-up photos with my phone. (see photos below) It was really interesting to see the insects and spiders close-up and to try and identify them. Don’t be scared, we are like giants to them!!

Bug Hotel

The main pollinating insects are: bees, butterflies, moths, flies, ants and beetles.

To help these great bugs thrive and survive you could make a bug hotel in your own garden using odds and ends!

Click on the link for help and look at the photos below for ideas.  It doesn’t have to be a fancy hotel, bugs aren’t fussy!!

Materials you can use…………………

Plant pots - plastic and ceramic · Plastic and ceramic pipes of all sizes · Roof tiles · Brick and concrete blocks · Sand · Plastic drinks bottles · Drinking straws · Plastic pen casings · Hollow bamboo canes · Pallets or strips of untreated wood · Dead wood - logs, sticks and twigs · Logs drills with holes of various sizes · Pine cones, dry seedheads · Straw, hay, dry leaf litter · Cardboard tubes and corrugated card (be sure to keep them dry)

I bet in no time your hotel will be full of the most amazing creatures. The insects will naturally find their way into it as they like dark squashed places.

Just be a bit careful sticking your fingers in – remember some insects nip and sting!  If you can’t or don’t want to build a hotel yourself just go and look under a flower pot or brick at home, I bet you’ll find lots of woodlice, beetles and worms.
