Update on the wearing of face masks from 3rd to 6th class.

3rd Dec 2021

3rd December 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians.

I am writing to you with an update following the Department of Education announcement this week.

The requirement for the wearing of face coverings will be implemented from Monday onwards in our school. It is expected that the school community including pupils adhere to and comply with the school’s Covid-19 response plan.

The letter issued to schools on 30 November 2021 states that the measure is a temporary measure and will be subject to review in mid-February 2022.

Although the guidance is not on a statutory footing, the information note issued to schools is clear that this is a requirement for all pupils in 3rd to 6th  classes. However, the Department of Education has set out three categories of exemptions to the requirement to wear a face covering as outlined in the letter sent out last week.

We are familiar with our pupils needs and are well placed to identify those whose complex needs mean the wearing of face covering may not be possible. We will discuss this with parents as required. In such circumstances, the school will not require medical certification to provide an exemption to the wearing of face coverings.

It is expected that the girls wear the face covering for the full duration of the school day with the following exceptions;

  • For the consumption of snacks and lunch, taking of water/beverages
  • For “mask breaks” during the day
  • For play time on the yard
  • For PE outdoors
  • For Outdoor teaching time
  • In exceptional circumstances where P.E. and sporting activities are taking place indoors.
  • For music e.g. singing, choir which may take place for short periods indoors.

Teachers will consider the space available and the ventilation measures in place before the removal of masks indoors is permitted.

Parents are requested to provide suitable face coverings for their child from Monday. The school will provide replacement masks for children should they forget their mask or damage it during school.

The following should be considered when choosing masks

  • the fabric is comfortable to wear
  • the mask fits snugly on child’s face
  • the design/print on the mask is appropriate for school

A Guide for Parents and Children on How to Use Face Coverings has been sent home to parents today. Parents are asked to read this document and discuss it with their child.

Teachers will also discuss the safe use of face coverings in class and will explain the new procedures to the children. Labelled Ziploc bags will be provided for the safe storage of masks while they are not in use during class time.

We are aware that this is a significant adjustment for our pupils. Their safety and wellbeing is our priority and we will endeavour to do all we can to make this transition as easy as possible for everyone.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if needed.

Yours sincerely,

Mary Andrews (Principal)
