St John The Baptist Girls School, Old Road Cashel Co Tipperary

Room 11 Work for the 5th - 8th May.

3rd May 2020

Hi girls,

It was lovely to hear from so many of you this week. It is great to be able to see your work and to see that you are all working very hard at home.

How are you all feeling about the news that schools will not be re-opening until September? Sad? Angry? Frustrated? Delighted? I'm sure there may have few tears over the weekend, especially from 6th class. Tears are natural and understandable when you receive bad news.

Now that we know that we won't be going back until September it's time to refocus.

We can look forward to the easing of restrictions and we can enjoy each new thing that we can do as we move through the phases; meeting our friends and going to shops, restaurants and playgrounds.

Sixth class, you can look forward to secondary school and all the excitement it will bring - new friends, new subjects, new teachers. You will have a busy summer ahead of you getting ready.

Fifth class, I'm sure that you are looking forward to taking their place as the "top dogs" in the school with all the extra responsibilities.

Until Friday the 26th of June at 12.30 p.m.,  though, you all part of this class. Miss. Flanagan, Miss Ryan and I will be putting our thinking hats on to come up with lots of fun things for us to do together. I hope that you will all get into the spirit of these activities and make the most of the final two months of 5th and 6th class.

We are over the worst and there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel.

Keep up the great work everyone!

Mrs Kealy

A note for parents

Dear Parent,

This is a hard week for the girls. I know that many of them, especially the sixth class, were hoping that we could return to school before the end of the school year and naturally many of them are upset.

It is also our eight week of distance learning and the longer we are all apart the more difficult it is for the girls to keep the work up.

We are all very busy trying to balance home and work life but I feel that the girls need our support, so this week, I have some suggestions for you the parents too.

  • I would encourage you to talk to the girls about how they are feeling about the recent news.
  • Help the girls to plan their week. They do not have to do every single item on the list, encourage them to do a variety of activities each day and check in with them daily to see that they are sticking to this plan.
  • School is a very social place and we learn by doing and by talking. Encourage active learning as much as possible through the games and activities I suggest.
  • Talk to the girls about the work - even an informal chat about what your daughter is learning or the books she is reading can be of huge benefit.
  • For the most part, the girls are capable of completing the work independently but they might a little help from time to time. Regardless of what they say, it is ok to help them.
  • Encourage the girls to give me regular feedback on their work and to send me photographs. I can then give feedback and help them to progress. Encourage them to send at least one email per week telling me what work they have completed and how they felt it went for them.
  • We are learning about time this week in maths. You can help to develop a understanding of time at home informally, as opportunities arise. I am providing some suggestions for parents on how they can do this now and throughout the summer.

If you would like to discuss any aspect of your daughter's learning please let me know and I can arrange to call you.

Work for the week.

This is a short week as Monday is a Bank Holiday. I am moving on to Time in maths,  éadai in Gaeilge and we will continue to learn about the apostrophe in English. You do not have to do every single piece of work - try to do a variety of subjects each day!

I would also like you to use this week as a "catch up week" to do some of the activities from other weeks that you would like to do. Maybe you would like to try the lung experiment or perhaps you didn't do the Mini Olympics in maths or the Pop Art activity - now is your chance!

Send at least one update this week to gkealycashelgirls@gmail.com Remember to let me know if I can post photographs of you to the website. You can send photographs of your schoolwork or any other projects you are doing.

I will respond to those who haven't had a reply from me yet, early next week.

Just for Fun! Phone a friend Activity!

It is important to have some fun at school too!  Here is a fun activity for you to try this week. Let me know what interesting things you discover about your classmates!

PHONE A FRIEND! It is important to check in with the people you love! Use this questionnaire to see how

(d) 6:45pm, the journey normally takes 55 minutes but there are expected traffic delays of up to
15 minutes. ___

2. This week we are learning about distance. To calculate distance we multiply the speed by the time.

distance = speed x time.

D = S x T

Example 1:

speed = 50kph     time = 3 hours

D = S x T       D = 50kph x 3 = 150km

Example 2

speed = 48kph     time = 15 mins (1/4 hour)

D = S x T        D = 48 kph x 1/4 hr = 12 km

Planet Maths pg. 102 do B, C, D, E  and pg 103 do B

For pg 102 Q D write all the times as a fraction of an hour first

eg. 30 mins = 1/2 hour , 15 mins = ? hour, 12 mins = ? (hint: write 12/60 and then write in its smallest terms)

Next week we will look at calculating speed & time.

The RTE  Home School Hub is planning to cover Time and Speed in Maths on Thursday so tune in at approx. 11.40
