Room 11: 6th Class - Wellness Week!!!!

31st May 2020

Hello everyone,

Welcome to Wellness Week!

Last week I told you that teachers were working hard to plan an exciting and fun June for all of you. We kick the month off this week with

  • Wellness Week
  • a collaborative art project
  • our first ever Virtual bunsale

Wellness Week is about looking after yourself. Taking care of your mental and physical health is really important and I am sure after such an uncertain time you will enjoy taking some time to work on you!

For fifth and sixth class we have labelled the days Mindful Monday, Thankful Tuesday, Wellness Wednesday, Triumphant Thursday and Feelgood Friday and you will find a menu of activities below. Monday is a Bank Holiday but I would encourage you to have a Mindful Bank Holiday Monday!

This week we would also like fifth and sixth class to complete a collaborative art project entitled "We're All in this Together". We will be putting the artwork together and displaying in the school as a reminder of this time.

I'm sure that you were all excited to receive your work packages in the post. Getting parcels in the post is definitely one of the highlights of the lock down. Alannah thinks the postman is great bringing her parcels of sweets, books and toys!

Miss. Flanagan and I have included some items in the pack for 6th class which we will be using for your 6th keepsakes and autograph book. All 6th class pupils will be invited to a Zoom meeting on Tuesday afternoon, where Miss. Flanagan and I will chat to you about about the end of year activities. Your parents will receive a text from us on Monday with details of the meeting.

We have given you a second brown envelope in your work pack. Remember to put your completed activities and any work you have completed for the time capsule into this envelope and keep it safe. We will organise to collect your work from you in June.

I'm really excited about the Virtual Bunsale on Friday. I always enjoy seeing the inventive ideas you come up with for your buns and I know that you had amazing plans for this year - now you have an excuse try them out!

I know that 5th & 6th class will go all out when hosting their Bunsale at home. You can decorate your stand, invent a game for your family to play and even dress up. Make sure you look at Ms. Cronin's Bunsale post for more Bunsale activities and make sure that you email photographs of your Bunsale to ecronincashelgirls@gmail.com for a chance to win cool prizes.

You still have time to send your stories, poems, drawings, reviews etc. for the Scribbler to mperduecashelgirls@gmail.com The closing date is Tuesday 2nd June. I am really looking forward to reading this year's magazine.

Thanks once again for sending me lots of updates and photographs. It's wonderful to hear that lots of you have been able to meet some of your friends for a socially distant visit. Connecting with our friends is so important for our well being - just remember to stay 2M apart!

Don't forget to stay connected with me too! You can continue to email me at any time with updates on your work, questions or even just to say hello!

Because of all of your hard work over the last 11 weeks you can now close the textbooks and enjoy an action packed June!

I hope you all enjoy this week's activities. 😊

Mrs. Kealy.

Work for this week

I will not be setting work from your textbooks for you this week, however, if you have not completed your Spellbound or any other activities from previous weeks you can continue to do them this week.

Likewise, if you would like to continue working on your Maths Challenge this week you can.

I would encourage you to keep reading throughout June and during the Summer Holidays. I have included the links to Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone for you to enjoy!

Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone

I hope that you’re all enjoying Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The next two chapters ‘The Sorting Hat’ and ‘The Potions Master’ are available to watch now. Make sure to check out the ‘Chapter Challenges’ under each video.

The Ickabog

JK Rowling is also releasing a new book called ‘The Ickabog’ online and some of you might like to read that too.

She is also running an art competition for the chance to have your drawing included in the book when it’s published in November. You’ll find all the information here.

Collaborative Art Project

We are asking every girl in 5th and 6th class to design a jigsaw piece on the theme "We're All in this Together" showing how we have all worked together to fight Covid 19. You could include frontline workers/essential workers/people staying at home/ washing our hands etc.

You received a jigsaw piece in your pack. Make it as colourful and eye-catching as you can! Remember to write your name on your piece so that you will be able to find it in years to come.

We will be collecting your finished piece from you and putting the jig saw together for a display in school so keep it safe!

Wellness Week Activities

Here is a menu of activities for Wellness Week. You do not have to complete every activity.

Choose the activities that appeal to you each day.

Mindful Monday

Screen free evening

Put the phone and/or tablet down for a screen free evening. Read a book, do some art, paint a sunset instead.

Get 10+ hours sleep

Listen to some Relaxation Techniques

Find a quiet corner, get comfortable, press play and let a NEPS psychologist talk you through some relaxation techniques. https://soundcloud.com/user-719669409/relaxation-techniques-30-03-2020

Drop Everything And Colour

Colour the 'We're All in this Together' mindfulness colouring (in your envelope).

Do 5 Random Acts of Kindness

Pick a “secret”  family member and leave them notes with compliments on it, take their dishes to the dishwasher, let them watch what they want on TV, dress their bed, pamper them for the day. Do whatever you can to make them feel special.

Thankful Tuesday

Gratitude Jar

Make a gratitude jar and decorate it. Fill it with things you are thankful for.

Gratitude Poem

Create an acrostic poem for GRATITUDE.

Thankful Letter

Write a thankful letter to a friend/family member.

Walk in my Shoes Activity

It is often difficult to understand what another person is going through or how they feel when they are going through difficult or challenging times. So design/decorate a pair of old runners/flip flops in any way you want. Or simply make a pair of shoes from cardboard and decorate them.

List 3 things you are grateful for

End the day by getting everyone in the house to list 3 things you are all grateful for.

Wellness Wednesday

Make a positive emotion potion picture

List positive emotions and draw them in a bottle, assign emothion a different colour.

Note: It is not possible to have positive emotions all the time, but we know that having plenty of positive emotion every day can help our wellbeing. Scientific research shows that we should have three positive emotions to balance one negative emotion. Here are some positive emotions (Pride, Interest, Belonging, Excitement, Amusement, Awe, Zest, Peace, Love and Gratitude).  What might give rise to these emotions for you? List some of these in your emotion potion.

My Superpowers

What are your character strengths? Ask someone what your character strengths are? How could you use these strengths to help others.

Draw a picture of yourself as a superhero showing your superpower (strengths) and how you could use your superpowers to help others.

Have a “Rainbow Moment”

List 3 good things that happened yesterday. These moments relate to the little parts of our day where things go well for us, such as enjoying playing with a friend or noticing something beautiful in nature.

Our brains naturally look for bad things in our day and with Rainbow Moments, we are re-training our brains to notice and pay attention to the small, simple, positive things that occur on a daily basis.

Make a “selfie” .

Triumphant Thursday

Achievement Shield (in your envelope)

Each one of you deserves a special award for all your achievements in primary school.

Remember that small successes are as important as big ones. We are all different and what one person finds easy may be difficult for another person. Mark may be very athletic and win prizes for running and medals in football, while Frank trains very hard and has kept improving at football and enjoys being on the team. Serena is very good at maths, but finds drawing difficult. She is proud of how her writing has improved in the last year.

  • in the small sections on the shield – name two achievements you are proud of, a skill, a talent and a quality that you
    have.
  • use the square for a drawing or photograph of yourself.
  • Write your own personal motto on the banner below the shield Here are some examples "Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken.""Keep your eyes on the prize.""Tomorrow is another day." "I can and I will".
