Room 11 Suggested work for 20th April 2020
Hello everyone,
I hope you had a lovely Easter break and that you made the most of the April sunshine.
All good things come to an end and it's time to to go back to "school". I've prepared your work for the week ahead. We are moving on to new topics this week. I really think that you will all be well able to do them on your own but if anyone is finding any of the work difficult you should look through the information and videos I have here and then do what you are able to do.
This week I have included an online quiz for you to take in maths and history where you can test yourself. we are going to play as a class so you can see how you score against your classmates.
I feel that it would be impossible for you to work for a full school day at home. I suggest that you should aim to do 90 mins to 2 hours of schoolwork per day, broken into two sessions with a break. I have not given work in every subject as you have less time.
There are lots of new suggestions that I know you will enjoy on the "Suggestions for Fifth Class" page for you to try out in your spare time.
It's hard to believe that its six weeks since we were in school and it's only natural that you must be wondering when you will get to see your friends again. Everyone has a theory about when the restrictions will be lifted and the uncertainty of what lies ahead can be overwhelming and upsetting.
There are so may things that we can't control right now, however, there are also many things that we can control such as our thoughts, how we spend our time and how we get along with everyone at home. In sport, many athletes focus on "controlling the controllable" so right now that is what I am asking you to do. I hope you can put the "what ifs" out of your mind and concentrate on doing the work I have set for you this week to the best of your ability.
The good news is that the experts seem to think that all our efforts seem to be working and there are promising signs that the spread of the virus is slowing down. This is hard but it is really important that we continue to keep up our good work - we are going in the right direction.
I miss teaching and I miss being in my classroom with all of you. I would love to be in school tomorrow teaching you about Grainne Mhaol, but for now, I will be staying home and I will be making the most of the extra time I have to spend with my family and my dog.
Until next week, mind yourselves,
Mrs. Kealy
Work for the Week.
It looks like a lot but I wanted to give you as much support as possible.
Some of your copies are in school so from now on we can do all the work, except mats, into your English copy and I will be able to correct it together. If you don't have a copy use whatever you have.
Most of the downloads are for your information, to read, you can download them but they do not have to be printed.

Maths - Length (we will cover length for two weeks)
We are all staying within a 2Km radius of our homes and social distancing, keeping 2 meters apart when out for a walk so this week we will look at length.
It is important to get lots of hands on experience of measuring length so that you can estimate lengths. You can use your ruler, a fitbit or maps on your phone and your parents might have a measuring tape you could borrow. There are lots of fun activities here that you can do with all your family.
Topic suggestions (length)
- Do you have a "Fitbit"? Use it to track where 1Km from your house is? Measure the distance around your back garden, how many rounds would you have to do to walk a Km?
- Collect information on the sports people who have run or swam the fastest kilometer? You could see how fast you can run 1Km.
- What are the world’s tallest buildings? Estimate how much taller they are than your home.
- Watch this short video on converting length from kilometers, to meters and to centimeters https://www.khanacademy.org/math/4th-engage-ny/engage-4th-module-2/4th-module-2-topic-b/v/converting-metric-distance
- Download the length activities below. Choose the activities you feel you need to do. You can discuss the answers with someone at home.
Textbook work(if you would like to do it)
Planet Maths 5th Class - pg 91 A & B and Pg 92 B
Planet Maths 6th Class - pg 85 A to G
I have included extra sheets below for anyone who does not have the book or for anyone who feels they would like extra practice. These sheets have answers.
I will give you the answers for the textbook work with next weeks work.
Test yourself
I have created a fun quiz on length on the website kahoot. Just click the link below to play and see how well you do compared to the other girls in our class. You can play on a phone, ipad, computer or laptop. You have until Friday evening to play.

Online Activities (for length)
Converting units of length (this is a challenging activity) www.transum.org/Maths/Activity/Units/
(Note: Answers are give at the end)

P.E. (including measuring)
- Mini Olympics
decide how best to measure the length of their various activities, for example, long jump, ball throwing, bean bag throwing. The various lengths can be ordered from shortest to longest and the distance between lengths can be calculated. Pupils should discuss how best to measure the distances in metres & centimetres to ensure accuracy and fairness. Alternatively pupils could design a simple mini-Olympics for younger siblings and take charge of recording their results of various activities such as bean
bag throwing, long jump, welly-throwing. Pupils should pay close attention to accuracy of lengths. - 100m Sprints (100 m is called a hectometre)
If you have the space mark out a 100m section suitable for running. (Alternatively a distance of 50m
could be ran twice) Take turns running and record their time. Compare their time to the world record holders.
Investigate what the Olympic Record for the hectometre is. Why does it differ from the World Record?
The pupils can investigate the Irish and World Records for 200m & 400m sprints. Further investigation
could involve 4 x 100m relay races.Using a stopwatch, have pupils see how they can run in 9 or 10 seconds and measure to the nearest meter.
S.P.H.E.
This Monday the RTE School Hub will be covering the topic "Worry" in S.P.H.E. for 5th & 6th class. The 5th & 6th class section is usually the last 20 mins. approx. 11.40 to 12.00. You can watch the programe online and download activities her https://www.rte.ie/learn/
You can download the activities on Worry here https://static.rasset.ie/documents/learn/2020/04/en-worksheet-5-6-mon20-sphe.pdf
S.E.S.E. (History)
Have you heard about the famous Irish Pirate Grace O'Malley? Grace lived 400 years ago at the time of Queen Elizabeth and William Shakespeare. She would not submit to Queen Elizabeth or anyone else, and she ruled over large areas of land around Clew Bay, as well as controlling the sea's off the coast of County Mayo.
I have included the Unit on Granuaile from the textbook below for you and you can listen to the story too.
- Listen to the story of Grace O'Malley from the book "Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls" read by Allison Mosshart https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DS4qdvFxGXo
- Test yourself - read the story below. Can you find the answers to sections A, B and C? (you don't need to write the answers)
- Get Creative - Draw the scene between Eoin Dubhdarra and Margaret O'Malley, when their 10 year old daughter wanted to go on a voyage to Spain. Include thought bubbles.
- Make your own timeline of Grace O'Malley's life with labels and drawings. Include the following dates 1530, 1540 (cut her hair), 1546 (first marriage), 1566 (second marriage), 1589 (Grace was accused of treason), 1593 (meeting with Queen Elizabeth), 1603 (died).
- What type of a person was Grace O'Malley? Write a paragraph describing her characteristics. Give examples from the text to support your answer.
