Room 11 Work for 27th April.

26th Apr 2020

Hello everyone,

It was wonderful to talk to so many of you during the week. I am delighted that everybody is trying their best to get through the work each week and that some girls are looking for even more work!!!

I may be biased but I think that you are all amazing. I am so proud of how mature and responsible you all are and how well you are coping with the whole situation. Sixth class, I know that this is especially hard for you but we will find a way to make sure that you go out with a bang - that’s a promise!!!

Remember that in school we do a variety of activities so when I say to try to do 90 mins to 2 hours of work a day that includes all activities, including P.E. activities, measuring, online games, videos etc. If you think about it we would never spend a lesson just writing in school so try not to rush to the written work.

Keep an eye on the "downloads" at the end of this page and the "Suggestions for 5th and 6th class" post for inspiration for activities to do in your spare time. I usually update them during the week.

This week you will be sending me back some of your work so that I will be able to see how you are doing. You can also give me some feedback on what went well for you and ask me questions if you have any problems etc.

Try try not to worry too much about school - you will not forget everything and you will not fall behind! Even though you are not in school I will be working very hard to make sure that you are 100% ready for 6th class or 1st year in September.

Keep up the hard work girls - this is hard but we have come so far & who knows what tomorrow will bring! Just When The Caterpillar Thought The World Was Over It Became A ...

Here is this week's work. Please check back during the week as I will add a Kahoot and more worksheets for you to download. I didn't have the answers ready to put up so I will also put them up during the week.

Maths - Fifth class

Measure 10 things at home that are under 1 metre. Measure them in cm and then write the lengths as mm, cm and M. You could try to find some lengths greater than 1 metre and write them as cm and Km.

Example:

  mm cm M
Planet Maths Textbook (width) 210 21 0.21
Planet Maths Textbook (length) 278 27.8 0.278

Remember:

Millimetres to Centimetres

1mm = 1/10 cm = 0.1cm

10 mm = 1 cm

Centimetres to Metres

1cm = 1/100 M or 0.01M

10cm = 10/100 M or 1/10 M or 0.1M

100cm = 1M

Metres to Kilometres

1M = 1/1000 Km or 0.001Km

10M = 10/1000Km or 1/100 km or 0.01Km

100M = 100/1000km or 1/10km or 0.1Km

1000M = 1Km

There is very little adding and subtracting length in our textbook so I have put extra sheets below for you to download if you would like.

Perimeter is the distance around the outside of a shape. You learned about the perimeter of regular shapes (rectangles & squares) in 4th class. This year you are working out the perimeter of irregular shapes. Watch the video to help you. (Use the code for EdCo above)

Planet Maths: Perimeter pg 92 (C) and pg 93 (A & B). Try the "Challenge Yourself!" exercise on page 93 if you are feeling confident.

Maths Challenge: Do five tests.

There are length word problems and maths puzzles in the download section. I will add more during the week.

Scale Draw a scaled map of your bedroom or garden.

Complete a map based of you bedroom or garden in the scale 1cm: 1M (1 cm is to 1M). As the map is a bird’s eye view, there is no need to measure height of objects, just the length and width.

First You will need to measure various distances and objects in your room or garden.

Here is an example of how you should record their answers.

Part of room Measurement in Metres Scale Measurement
Width of classroom 8.5 M 8.5 cm
Length of classroom 12.5 M 12 1/4 cm

Now draw an outline map on in your maths copy (assume one box is 1cm squared)
You can also come up with a simple key to the features of the classroom.

Art - Covid -19 Pop Art.

Download and watch the videos below on Andy Warhol. You may need to pause it to read the pages.

Andy Warhol used repeated images of famous people in different colours to create some of his most famous portraits. In the 1960's Warhol decided to paint daily objects that were mass produces like Coke bottles or soup cans. You may have seen the pop art created by Miss. Ryan's class on their notice board before Easter.

I would like you to choose an item that represents the Covid-19 emergency and use it to create a piece of art in Andy Warhol's Pop-Art style. It could be hand sanitiser, toilet roll etc.

Instructions:

  • Fold a piece of A4 paper into quarters.
  • Draw your picture in one quarter. Using tracing paper (baking paper from the kitchen), copy the image into the other 3 quarters.
  • Colour in each picture using only 4 colours.
  • Make sure each of the images is a different colour. Use the images in the video of the children’s work to help you.

Send back a photo for the website.
