Room 10 School work April 20th - April 24th

19th Apr 2020

Hello again girls,

I hope you are well and keeping yourselves busy. I’m sure you had a well earned rest over the Easter holidays and that you had time to rest and relax.  I also hope your parents are well and safe too and that you are all making the most of this time at home together.

We have been lucky that the weather has been good and we all have been able to get out for walks or cycles, still keeping social distancing in mind. It is positive to hear from Minister Simon Harris that all the good work and sacrifices we have made so far have helped to save lives in this country and that soon in the future we will all be able to meet up with family and friends again. I cannot wait!!!

Unfortunately, schools are not opening for the foreseeable future so I am setting some work for you to engage with as you please.  Just to remind you that this is not to overwhelm you and your parents. It is only a menu. Pick and choose as you please. However, I do hope that you are engaging with this work on some level and keeping those young brains working and active . You know what they say…”use it or lose it”.  We are all part of  “living history” right now and life will resume after Covid 19 is over.  So we need to be ready 6th class. If you remember back to Junior Infants..a long time ago… there you were learning to read.  Well now after all those years of hard work,  you are now reading to learn!!! So lets put it into action with the assignments I’ve put together this week.

I do really hope we will see each other soon.

Keep well and safe. I am very proud of you.

Best wishes always,

Aileen Flanagan.

School work for  20th April-  24th April.

  • Research Gráinne Mhaol, Ireland’s most notorious female pirate. Look at this website rte.ie/archives. Its easier to google Grainne Mhaol first and it comes up in the search !!!! Click on the link there. www.askaboutireland.ie is also a website worth looking at.
  • Write a short story from Grainne’s point of view. Imagine you are her. Put yourself in her shoes. Here is a little background to help you.

Her father wouldn’t take her with him on board his ship because she was a girl and  girls were not allowed to be onboard a ship in those days. She also had beautiful black raven hair and he said it would get caught up in the ropes onboard the ship. So she cut off her hair  (and became known as “Bald Grainne”) and hid onboard her fathers ship?  She only emerged when the ship was too far out to sea to turn back. Grainne turned out to be a fantastic sailor and could work and  read the weather far better than any of the men on board, which was a huge skill in those days.

Write how it felt to be told you can’t go on the ship with your father because you are a girl and because you wouldn’t have been as good as a boy on board the ship. Include how it felt to be cutting off your hair and hiding on the ship. What happened when you came out?
