Room 10 Assignments for 15th -19th June 2020.

14th Jun 2020

Hi girls,

I hope you are all well and keeping safe and that you enjoyed last weeks activities. I hope you enjoyed taking a walk down memory lane and remembering the activities we did together and the places we went. I saw some beautiful kindness rocks and 6th class memory walls.

This week we are doing our Green Schools week. We have some fabulous ideas for you to do. We would like you to get outside and explore the environment this week as part of Green Schools Week. We would also like you to think about how we all impact the environment both negatively and positively and what we can do to help make our environment better.

Mrs. O’Brien has put a lot of work into the activities for Green Schools Week and we hope you enjoy it!

There is a picture of pirates that we knitted in school at the end of this post. Can you please look at it and let me know via my email if one is yours please. That way I can put it in your bag.

6th class Transition Programme.

6th class you will be moving on to secondary school in September. I will miss seeing you all in school and enjoying your company and teaching you but alas that is life!! My grandmother often quoted this line to me when I was small,  “Life’s only rule is that things will always change”. How true that is! Life is indeed full of change and we must embrace that change for it allows us to grow and become better, stronger people.

So I have included a booklet , “From Big Fish To Little Fish”, for you and your parents to read and work through this week. It’s a transition booklet and has exercises in it which I would like you to read and complete. By doing this you will become knowledgeable about what is expected of you in secondary school next September, what to do if you have a problem, how to make new friends, how to read a timetable and how to approach the issue of lots more homework in secondary school etc. It is well worth doing.

There is also a video you might find useful. Watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5eQVbZBs3I

Some of you may be looking forward to moving on to secondary school but no matter what,  all of you will feel a little nervous and anxious about that move. Reading this booklet will help to alleviate the nervousness and you will find that the prospect of being a 1st year is not as nerve wracking as you think. Everyone felt what you are feeling  right now and it is totally normal.

Each day you are in there you will find it becomes easier and easier. You will look back and think what was I nervous about. But remember this, a good start means everything. Make a good impression on your new teachers by being prepared and ready to work. Show them the wonderful students you are and what an asset you will be to their school. Just like the leaders you were in our school!! Go get ‘em kids!!!

  • Calculate the age of a tree.

Here is a fun maths activity for you to calculate the age of a tree (You will need a measuring tape).

What to do:

  1. Do you know the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees? Find a deciduous tree at home
  2. First, face the trunk and measure 1.3m from the ground. This is the point at which you need to measure the circumference of the trunk.
  3. At 1.3m from the ground, use a tape measure to measure the circumference of (distance around) the trunk, in centimetres. Make sure you avoid any lumps or branches.
  4. To get an approximate age for the tree, convert the measurement of the circumference in centimetres, to inches. Here is an example of the calculation:

1 inch = 2.5 cm Tree circumference = 110 cm Calculation = 110 ÷ 2.5 = 44 inches Age of tree = 44 years!

What is the oldest tree you can find?

  • A poem about a tree.

Read the poem about trees in the downloads by Joyce Kilmer. I remember learning it when I was in school.
