Mrs. O Briens English Groups

20th Apr 2020

Hi to all my girls from Mrs. O Brien (20th- 24th April)

I hope that you are all well and keeping busy. I am keeping busy by walking my dog Tintin everyday with my boys. I am also getting out in the garden and doing lots of baking. I wanted to say hello and tell you all that I am missing you and I hope that you are doing lots of nice activities to keep you busy. As you know I have been doing a course all year and most of my work has been on the computer and sending it into my teachers! So, as we must all stay at home for now, I thought it might be good to see if we could continue to practice our reading, and you can do it from home on your computers or phones!  So, you will need to connect to the website I have set up, and you will find your book to read there waiting for you. I have given a password to your Mammy and also your group name. Ask Mammy for your password and after reading the book you can do some of the activities if you like. I hope you enjoy the book I’ve chosen for you.

All groups this week will need to do this

  1. To connect to the website, you need to do the following.
  2. Type in raz-kids.com
  3. Click on the right where it says Kids Login
  4. My name will come up with my username and underneath you will find your initials (e.g. Fionn Murphy =FB)
  5. Click on your initials and then it will ask you for your student password.
  6. Type in your password.
  7. Then you will be asked to do a little quiz so go ahead and do it.
  8. Once that’s completed you can go back to the home page.
  9. Click into reading assignments and scroll down on this page and your book will be there for you to read.
  10. When you have the book read you can go back and click on the box with a question mark in it and you can do the quiz.

Activities

  • Log onto the site and do the quiz. (This might take a while so maybe just do this on the first day)
  • Read your book over a couple of days.
  • Listen to the story being read to you by clicking on the headphones.
  • Practice building your fluency when reading like we have been doing in class...Can you remember them? (Groups Red, Orange and Yellow)
  • Reading at the right speed...not too fast and not too slow!
  • Reading with expression in your voice.
  • Pausing at a comma and at the end of each sentence.
  • Using our reading strategy Chunky Monkey when we come across a difficult word.
  • Choose a piece of the story and read it out loud for someone in your house.
  • Pick a few new words that you don’t understand and look them up or ask someone what they mean. Put them into sentences in your copy or just say them in a sentence to someone at home.
  • Play a game with some words …write them on pieces of paper and sort them out alphabetically.
  • Make up a word search with some of the new words and get someone at home to find them.
  • Draw a picture of some part of the story that you liked.
  • Do an activity sheet that I have attached below. I have put your group name beside the activity but if you want to do one of the others then you can! You can print it off or just make your own!
