Mrs. Kealy's Sixth Class 11th May (updated to include Planet Maths Pages)

10th May 2020

Hello Sixth Class,

I hope that you are all well!

Can you believe that on Tuesday it will be two months since we were in school? It feels like only yesterday that we were preparing for the Confirmation Ceremony. We really were so lucky to be able to celebrate your Confirmation and that you all got to go to Grogan’s together on your last Monday physically in school. (If only I had brought a camera!)

This week I have put up two posts, one for 5th Class and one for 6th Class. I hope that this will make it easier for you to do the work.

Miss. Ryan, Miss. Flanagan and I have an exciting photograph challenge for everyone in fifth and sixth class this week too. No event in my lifetime had such a big impact on our lives in Ireland. Just like Anne Frank's diary, in years to come people will be looking at our photographs and diaries to find out what it was like to live through the Covid-19 lockdown.

You have all been such wonderful buddies to the Junior Infants this year. Mrs. Mockler and Miss. Skehan have told me that the junior infants are upset to be missing school. Can you imagine how confusing this has been for them? I hope that you can continue to be a great example to them by taking part in the photograph challenge and sending in some photographs of the activities you are doing at home. I know that they would be excited to see photographs of their buddies on the school website.

Working on your own at home just isn’t the same as working together in school but you are all doing so well! I am delighted with all the emails I am receiving and I am really impressed by the standard of your work.

If you haven’t sent me an email yet - I’d love to hear from you this week. Even a short email telling me what work you have covered and how you are getting on would be great.

Have a great week everyone!

Mrs. Kealy

Gaeilge

In Irish, I think that two things are important for you as sixth class; the first is listening to spoken Irish and the second is practicing Irish grammar. I have said it so often this year you all understand much Irish – you just need to be more confident about it!

This week Muinteoir Cliona will be looking at “An Teach” in Gaeilge on the RTE Home School Hub next Friday. So do try to watch and listen on Friday at about 11.40 a.m.

You could also watch some of the homeschool programme for Irish speaking pupils. It’s called “Scoil ar Cula4” and it is on every day at 10am on TG4 (the Irish channel). You won’t understand everything but it will keep you in touch with your Irish

Those of you who have older siblings or cousins in secondary school will know that having a good foundation in Irish Grammar is a huge advantage in first year.

There are 11 irregular verbs in Irish – you learned them off in Miss. Ryan’s class (and did a big test) but we hadn’t revised them yet this year.

This week we are going to revise the first 3 - take one a day and practice them!

Download the activities below – you can print them or write into your copy. Learn the verbs and do the activities.

Tháinig mé / Tagaim/ Tiocfaidh mé

Chuaigh mé / Téim/ Rachaidh mé

Thug mé / Tugaim/ Tabharfaidh mé

Phone a Friend Challenge “as Gaeilge”

Download the questions below and then get your friend to answer them over the phone.

Maths

Did you watch the RTE Home School Hub last Thursday when Muinteoir Cliona was teaching about Distance Speed and Time.

You can watch it back on RTE player here (skip to the last section) https://www.rte.ie/player/series/rt%C3%A9-home-school-hub/SI0000006854?epguid=IP000065995

  • Distance is how far something travels
  • Speed is how fast something travels.
  • Time is how long something takes to happen.

The distance, speed and time triangle is an easy way to remember the formulae to help you work out problems. You can see it in the photograph.

The way I remember it is that Distance is Speed x Time so Distance goes on top.

  • Distance is speed x Time
  • Speed is Distance over Time (Distance divided by Time)
  • Time is Distance over Speed (Distance divided by Speed)

Planet Maths Work

Pg 102 (E ) – calculate the time

Pg. 103 (A) – calculate your speed.

Pg 106 (B) Q1 and (C)

Time Zones; Pg 105

More Challenging Activity  – pg 104 (A) (if you think you are up for a challenge)

Hint: Write 1min, 5mins and 12 mins as a fraction of an hour

pg 104 A Q 2 (a)

Speed = Distance

              Time

Speed = 30 km ÷ ¼

30   ÷  1

1         4

30km x 4= 120kph

Maths Challenge: You can work at your own pace in Maths Challenge for the rest of the year. You can do one a week, one a day – it’s up to you!

Tables

Keep practicing your tables!

I have a tables activity sheet in the downloads as extra work.

Here are some online activities https://www.transum.org/Tables/Times_Tables.asp

English

Spellbound: Unit 30

Please look over the vocabulary at the start of the week. You can use https://www.dictionary.com/ to check the meaning if you don't have a dictionary at home. You can also how the word is pronounced.

LCWC: from now on we will only do LCWC once a week - choose 4 difficult words and do LCWC for them

100 Word Challenge: try out this week’s challenge.

Reading: Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone

Are you a Harry Potter fan? Have you been meaning to read some of his books?

Whether you are a Potter fan or a first-time reader you will enjoy listening to the Chapter One of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone read aloud by Daniel Radcliffe a.k.a Harry Potter.

Watch the video here (it’s 25 mins long) https://www.wizardingworld.com/chapters/reading-the-boy-who-lived

You will find many activities here on Harry Potter

Poetry Writing

Compose a poem titled "I Can Be a Light" to put into your Confirmation Scrapbook? If you did you can redraft it this week.

If you haven’t yet finished your poem yet you can continue this week.

Science: The Wonderful World of Bees

This week we are learning about bees and we are going to make a mind map to show our information.

What is a Mind Map?

Mind mapping is a great tool to present and understand information. Mind mapping uses both sides of the brain and helps you to remember information – it is very useful for study.

There is an example of a mind map in the downloads .

Activity: Bee Mind Map

This week I would like you to do a mind map for bees

You can download the information sheet on bees in the downloads section below or visit this website to find out about bees https://www.dkfindout.com/us/animals-and-nature/insects/bees-and-wasps/

These videos also really good

Making your mind map

  • Use a plain white page if you can and coloured pencils.
  • First draw a Bee at the middle of the page. You can write the word Bees if you like.
  • Choose 5/6 sub-categories (like you did for your report writing) and give each a colour.
  • Draw some curved connecting lines coming from the middle (one for each sub-category). Use the colours you have chosen for your sub-categories to draw the curved lines.
  • Name each sub-category using the given colour and draw a little picture to represent it (this uses both sides of the brain.
  • From each of these sub-categories, draw other connected lines, spreading like the branches of the tree. Use the same colour as the sub-theme for the connected lines. These additional branches represent the detail.

Here are some sub-categories you could use

  1. Types (of Bees)
  2. Life Cycle
  3. Appearance
  4. Honey
  5. (Life in the) Hive
  6. Importance (of Bees)

Art

This papier maché bee hive is quite cool looking  and some of you might like to attempt it.

You blow up a balloon.

Use strips of newspaper (about 8cm long) covered in PVA glue and layer it over the balloon.

Two or three layers may needed to be done to strengthen the hive.

Leave it to dry somewhere warm until hard. Once it is really hard and will not collapse. you can pop the balloon inside. The hive then needs to be painted and decorated as you like. Have fun!!

Religion

May is the Month of Mary.

Traditionally families would have had May Altar in their homes. It would have a statue of Mary and would be decorated with flowers.

Colour the picture of Mary and create your own May Altar at home or why not pick some wildflowers and leave them and the picture for an elderly neighbour.

A challenge for 5th and 6th class.

This week we are putting a challenge out there for everyone in 5th and 6th   to take part in.

We want to see what you are doing when you are out and about on walks and cycles etc. So get out your camera and take a picture of yourself or those you are in lockdown with somewhere outside in nature.

Miss. Flanagan took one of her son in a beautiful field of yellow flowers.

When we look at that we will always remember that it was 2020 and the Covid 19 pandemic was in full swing.

All photos to be emailed to your class teacher by the 22nd May.

We hope to put them together in a collage/montage in the future. Have fun and be creative!!!
