Hello fifth class, 

I hope that you are all well. 

Can you believe that on Tuesday it will be two months since we were in school?

It feels like only yesterday that we were sitting in the classroom learning about Italy and percentages and having lots of choir practice for the Confirmation.

If we were in school this week we would probably be doing our Drumcondra Tests, I know that most of you will be delighted to be missing out on them this year!

This week I have put up two posts one, for 5th Class and one for 6th Class. I hope that this will make it easier for you to do the work.

Miss. Ryan, Miss. Flanagan and I have an exciting photograph challenge for everyone in fifth and sixth class this week - I hope that you enjoy taking photographs and showing us what you are doing at home. 

No event in my lifetime had such a big impact on our lives in Ireland. Just like Anne Frank's diary in years to come people will be looking at our photographs and diaries to find out what it was like to live through the Covid-19 lockdown. 

Working on your own at home just isn’t the same as working together in school but you are all doing so well! I am delighted with all the emails I am receiving and I am really impressed with by your your hard work. 

If you haven’t sent me an email yet - I’d love to hear from you this week. Even a short email would be fantastic to tell me what work you have covered and how you are getting on.

Gaeilge

This week Muinteoir Cliona will be looking at “An Teach” in Gaeilge on the RTE Home School Hub next Friday. So do try to watch and listen on Friday at about 11.40 a.m.

You could also watch some of the homeschool programme for Irish speaking pupils. It’s called “Scoil ar Cula4” and it is on every day at 10am on TG4 (the Irish channel). You won’t understand everything but it will keep you in touch with your Irish.

Spellbound: Unit 30

Please look over the vocabulary at the start of the week. You can use https://www.dictionary.com/ to check the meaning if you don't have a dictionary at home. You can also how the word is pronounced.  

LCWC: from now on we will only do LCWC once a week - choose 4 difficult words and do LCWC for them

100 Word Challenge: Fifth class you are really making a huge effort to do the 100 Word Challenge every week and I can really see your writing improving so keep up the great work and try out this week’s challenge.

Science: The Wonderful World of Bees

This week we are learning about bees and we are going to make a mind map.

What is a Mind Map?

Mind mapping is a great tool to present and understand information. Mind mapping uses both sides of the brain and helps you to remember information – it is very useful for study.

Making your mind map

  • Use a plain white page if you can and coloured pencils.
  • First draw a Bee at the middle of the page. You can write the word Bees if you like.
  • Choose 5/6 sub-categories (like you did for your report writing) and give each a colour.
  • Draw some curved connecting lines coming from the middle (one for each sub-category). Use the colours you have chosen for your sub-categories to draw the curved lines.
  • Name each sub-category using the given colour and draw a little picture to represent it (this uses both sides of the brain.
  • From each of these sub-categories, draw other connected lines, spreading like the branches of the tree. Use the same colour as the sub-theme for the connected lines. These additional branches represent the detail.

Art

This papier maché bee hive is quite cool looking  and some of you might like to attempt it. 

You blow up a balloon.

Use strips of newspaper (about 8cm long) covered in PVA glue and layer it over the balloon.

Two or three layers may needed to be done to strengthen the hive.

Leave it to dry somewhere warm until hard. Once it is really hard and will not collapse. you can pop the balloon inside. The hive then needs to be painted and decorated as you like. Have fun!!

Religion

May is the Month of Mary.

Traditionally families would have had May Altar in their homes. It would have a statue of Mary and would be decorated with flowers.

Colour the picture of Mary and create your own May Altar at home or why not pick some wildflowers and leave them and the picture for an elderly neighbour.

A challenge for 5th and 6th class.

This week we are putting a challenge out there for everyone in 5th and 6th   to take part in. 

We want to see what you are doing when you are out and about on walks and cycles etc. So get out your camera and take a picture of yourself or those you are in lockdown with somewhere outside in nature.

Miss. Flanagan took one of her son in a beautiful field of yellow flowers.

When we look at that we will always remember that it was 2020 and the Covid 19 pandemic was in full swing.

All photos to be emailed to your class teacher by the 22nd May. 

We hope to put them together in a collage/montage in the future. Have fun and be creative!!!
