KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK 1ST ROOM 6!

3rd May 2020

Hi wonderful girls,

I hope you and all your families are well. It was so good to get emails and photos from some of you during the week. It made me very happy indeed. I’d be thrilled to get more emails next week. Maybe you could send some news to me. If you include photos of yourself I can put them on the website with parent's permission. Can’t wait! Did you see the photos that went up over the last few days? Beautiful!

I hope you are getting on ok with the work and doing some of the fun stuff too like learning songs and making boats that don’t sink!! Also check out "Soothing Sounds On Spotify" that I posted on  website 31st March for some quiet time and relaxing music and listen to "Huge Bag of Worries" story in the letter I wrote "How's it Going?" with the picture of the moon 19th April if you haven't already.

I have more work here if you need it. The extra activities if you get to do some, are for 2 weeks.

Remember to dance lots, practise your ball and skipping skills and do any exercise your parents want you to do.

Miss you,

Stay in touch,

Big massive hugs,

Ms. Maggie O’Brien

  • Look at the leaves of each flower. What shape are they?
  • How are the flowers different? How are their leaves different?
  • Record your investigations by sketching the flowers, stems and leaves.

Geography and SPHE: Caring for my Locality

Concentrate on looking after our environment by continuing to:

  • Pick up litter
  • Reduce waste
  • Reuse materials
  • Recycle materials
  • Look after our Local Wildlife (Plant, let wildflowers grow and Mind Our Bugs!)

The main reason we need insects is because they pollinate plants and if we didn’t have them then 80% of all the plants we use for food would disappear. It is essential that we stop using poisonous sprays on our crops and instead encourage a balance of insects to do the work for us. The main pollinating insects are: bees, butterflies, moths, flies, ants and beetles.

  • To help these good bugs thrive and survive you could make a bug hotel in your own garden using odds and ends! Click on the link for help and look at the photos below for ideas….It doesn’t have to be a fancy hotel, bugs aren’t fussy!!

http://bioweb.ie/bug-hotel/

                                                Materials you can use…………………

  • Plant pots - plastic and ceramic
  • Plastic and ceramic pipes of all sizes
  • Roof tiles
  • Brick and concrete blocks
  • Sand
  • Plastic drinks bottles
  • Drinking straws
  • Plastic pen casings
  • ·       Hollow bamboo canes
  • ·       Pallets or strips of untreated wood
  • ·       Dead wood - logs, sticks and twigs
  • ·       Logs drills with holes of various sizes
  • ·       Pine cones, dry seedheads
  • ·       Straw, hay, dry leaf litter
  • Cardboard tubes and corrugated card (be sure to keep them dry)

I bet in no time your hotel will be full of the most amazing creatures.

The insects will naturally find their way into it as they like dark squashed places.

Just be a bit careful sticking your fingers in – remember some insects nip and sting!

If you can’t or don’t want to build a hotel yourself just go and look under a flower pot or brick at home, I bet you’ll find lots of woodlice, beetles and worms.

Art:

  • Wildflower sketches
  • Tom Crean drawings
  • Design and make a bug hotel or make/build something using 3D shapes or recycled materials.
