Green Schools Update!
Green Schools 2016/17
Work is well underway to achieve our 6th Green Schools flag. The theme this year is Global Citizenship and Litter and Waste. The members of the committee are Faye Fitzell, Sarah Grogan, Zuzanna Sumara, Grace Daly, Sarah Sheehan, Clara Brosnan, Lauren Long, Aoibhe Quirke, Anna O’ Dwyer, Collette McNamara, Natascha O’Brien and Maggie O’Brien.
We have been working very hard electing, planning, auditing , learning, composing, trialling and putting initiatives into place.
Initiatives to reduce litter and waste include:
- Bins clearly labelled compost, landfill, recycling.
- Bin free yards except for a compost bin.
- All waste goes home in lunchbox.
- Lunchbox packaging reduced.
- 4 classes are trialling “a bin free classroom”.
- Boxes purchased for each class for reusable paper.
- Boxes for class tables for pencil parings.
- Litter audit on school grounds carried out.
- Litter hotspots highlighted.
- 3rd and 4th classes visited the recycling centre in Cashel
Initiatives re. Global Citizenship include:
- Awareness of the wealth of information and teaching material online on the Global Goals.
- Green School’s Committee have watched videos from these resources to help formulate plans and ideas.
- Global Goals poster displayed in each classroom.
- Slogan formulated by committee and displayed in each classroom.
- Survey completed in senior classes.
- Date set for International/Global Citizenship week. 21st -25th
- Plan to bring issues of global concern to the attention of the staff e.g. Nestle boycott week 28th Oct.to 4th Nov.
Maintaining all the success in achieving our previous 5 flags is of course still very important.
We will continue to walk to school, park and stride, carpool, remember the importance of biodiversity, develop the school garden and be aware at all times of the need to conserve energy and water.
Take a look at the global goals online and see what you can do to help to be a global citizen.
All ideas welcome.
“We all have a duty
To save the Earth’s beauty
So greed and waste beware
We have the power to share and care.”
