Gaelic Football.
We have come to the end of yet another very enjoyable and sporting year on the Gaelic Football pitch.
Our U13 team were the first to take to the pitch when they played in the U13 blitz which was held in Clerihan. The girls got off to a great start with victories over Rosegreen and Two Mile Borris in their side of the competition putting them through to the Blitz Final against Gaelscoil Chuain Meala. The Cashel girls went on to win the blitz in what was a very exciting and closely contested final.
Our U13 team was now through to the County Semi-final in Leahy Park, Cashel. They came up against a very impressive Gaelscoil Durlas team but gave their all and challenged right up to the final whistle. Gaelscoil Durlas eventually went on to win the County final in Semple Stadium.
This team is to be commended not only for their skill but also for their dedication, teamwork and co-operation both on and off the pitch. They have been a wonderful example for the younger players in our school this year.
Many of this U13 team will be leaving our school in June and I hope that they continue to play Gaelic Football in Secondary School.
Next it was the turn of our first U11 team who travelled to Durlas Og pitch in Thurles for their blitz.
The girls faced tough opposition in Gaelscoil Durlas, St. Joseph’s, Templemore and Moycarkey. Despite many fine performances throughout the pitch the team did not qualify for the final of the blitz on the day.
This is an up and coming team with great promise. Many of these players are only in their second year playing Gaelic Football and we look forward to seeing them progress next year.
Finally our second U11 team played in the U11B blitz in Golden. Our team made up entirely of players from fourth class had wins over Rosegreen and Sisters of Charity, Clonmel, however, they lost out to a very strong St. Joseph's team from Templemore. St. Josephs were the eventual winners of the blitz.
For many of the U11B team this was their very first Gaelic Football match and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience of putting on the school jersey and representing the school. It was great to see them put their Gaelic football skills into practice and developing teamwork and gamesmanship.
This year we said goodbye to our coach Pauric Murray. Pauric was responsible for introducing Gaelic Football to our school and he devoted many, many hours to the promotion of physical activity and Gaelic Football within the school.
We thank Pauric for all his voluntary work down through the years.
A big thank you also to Miss. Kate Skehan who stepped in to train the girls with Mrs. Kealy this year.
Gaelic Football has now finished up for the year and camogie training will start up in the new year. We hope to see even more girls playing both Camogie and Gaelic Football in 2019.
