Forest Walk

Thursday, 9th October was National Tree Day. Third Class embarked on a Forest Walk to Dundrum Woods. The day was wet and dreary but the spirits wer undaunted. The girls set off on teh bus journey in the morning with wellies and plastic macs in hand. 

On arrival they were led along a pathway by a very interesting guide. He pointed out many varieties of trees which grow in this magnificent forest. It was obvious that the girls were enthralled by the information being imparted as they asked many questions. Everyone was given a sample of a leaf, twig or plant to bring back to school for the nature table. They marvelled at the hurley-making techniques explained and were fascinated a teh array of old farm machinery which was on display in one area of the forest. Nearby, there was a sheltered spot where the work of a local taxidermist could be viewed. It gave the children the opportunity to explore at very close range the many wild creatures of this woodland habitat e.g. hedge-hogs, pheasants, barn owls, wild ducks, to mention a few. 

During the following days the girls produced a project and wrote newspaper reports and poetry based on their trip to teh wood. It was indeed a very worthwhile experience. Many thanks to Michelle Manton who accompanied the class.
