St John The Baptist Girls School, Old Road Cashel Co Tipperary

6th Class Room 11 - 18th May 2020

17th May 2020

Hello sixth class,

Monday marks the beginning of Phase 1 in the Governments roadmap for easing Covid 19 restrictions.

Most of the changes in Phase one will make little difference to your lives, however, it is the beginning of the end of the lockdown. It is exciting to think that we all be able to see our friends and family very, very, soon.

Last week we introduced a Photograph Challenge – I hope that you are having lots of fun taking the photographs. Get them in to my by this Friday.

This week we are introducing our School Time Capsule for 5th and 6th Class.

A time capsule is a container that holds present day items, such as photos, newspapers, letters and more. It's typically hidden away for your future self or someone of your choosing to open.

Each week we will set a task for you to complete.

Keep the activities safe. We will organise to collect your work from you in June.

All the work, along with your photographs will be put together in a School Time Capsule to be hidden away by Mrs. Andrews until 2030.

Each one of you will be invited back to Time Capsule opening. It will be an exciting event as everyone looks back on this time and sees how far they have all come.

With just six weeks to go to the end of the school year it is time to start bringing your time in St. John the Baptist Girls’ School to a close. Over the next six weeks we will be celebrating all that you have achieved during your time in our school and looking forward to your next big step in Secondary School.

Keep sending me your photographs and work girls – it really makes my day to see how hard you are working! I am so proud of each and every one of you for sticking with the work during – I know that working at home isn’t easy!

You have been fantastic role models for the younger girls in our school throughout the year and I know that you will continue to give 100% until June 26th!

Have a great week,

Mrs. Kealy

Have you photographs of your first day in school, your First Holy Communion, Confirmation or any other school events?

Every year we ask 6th class to bring in photographs of their time in our school to use as part of the end of year celebrations, we would love you to send any photographs you may have to me by email or by post (please put your name on the back so we can return them).

RTE Home School Hub.

This week Muinteoir Cliona will be looking at “Eadai” in Gaeilge on the RTE Home School Hub on Tuesday. So do try to watch and listen on Tuesday at about 11.40 a.m.

Did you watch the Home School Hub on Friday. Muinteoir Cliona looked at the rooms of the house and showed you how to make a plan of your house.

There are 11 irregular verbs in Irish – you learned them off in Miss. Ryan’s class (and did a big test) but we hadn’t revised them yet this year.

This week we are going to revise the next 3 - take one a day and practice them!

Download the activities below – you can print them or write into your copy. Learn the verbs and do the activities.

Holes Novel

Did any of you read on in Holes? Did you finish reading it?

You brought the novel home on the last day of school. Read chapter 44- 47 this week and we will finish reading the book next week.

You can listen to the book read aloud here & follow it in your book.

Palindromes

“Stanley Yelnats” is a palindrome, spelled the same both forward and backward. Other palindromes include the words mom, radar, and racecar, and the names Elle, Anna, and Otto.

Whole phrases can be palindromes, too, such as “A daffodil slid off Ada” and “Rats live on no evil star.”

Come up with some palindromes of your own, or make your name into a palindrome.

Apostrophes

Some girls were caught out by the apostrophes exercise last week. There is a sheet to download with extra practice of apostrophes - you only have to do C.

Maths – Money

This week we will be covering money. Mrs. Andrews has covered calculating VAT and interest with you.

1. Finding the best value

Planet Maths pg132 A

Changing Euros into other currencies

Quick tip: to remember what to do:

When we are going on holidays we want as much money as possible to spend. So think this, we have euros and want to multiply to get as much foreign currency to spend on holidays in that country. Multiply the euros by the foreign exchange rate.

However, when coming home from holidays we have a smaller amount of foreign currency. So we convert our foreign currency to euro by dividing by the foreign exchange rate)

Try these out and see how you get on.

Planet Maths pg. 134 (A & B)

Parental Involvement

  • Discussing different currencies and countries.
  • Ask an older relative do they have any old Irish currency, i.e. notes and coins. Examine size, colour, material, weight, design, artwork, symbols used, graphics, etc.
  • Look at how bills are calculated, e.g. plumber, mechanic, electrician to include parts, labour and VAT.

Maths Challenge: You can work at your own pace in Maths Challenge for the rest of the year. You can do one a week, one a day – it’s up to you!

Confirmation Scrapbook.

Your Confirmation Scrapbook is a memento of your Confirmation Day – something you will bring out in years to come to remember the occasion.

You put a lot of the work into your scrapbook before the school closed but there were a few things left for us to do over the next few weeks.

My Confirmation Day

What are your memories of your Confirmation Day?

Write an account of your Confirmation Day including the following;

  • a brief description of how you prepared for your Confirmation Day
  • a description of the Ceremony. Who accompanied you to the church? What was your role in the Ceremony? What are your memories of the ceremony? How did you feel during the ceremony?
  • A description of how you celebrated your Confirmation. Who celebrated with you? Where did you celebrate? What are your memories of the celebrations?

You will be able to include a photograph with your writing.

This is a Recount: Look at pg 6 and pg 12 of your Word Wizard for guidelines on how you should structure your Recount.

Design your Scrapbook Cover.

Design your scrapbook cover on a plain A4 page. We will then cover the scrapbook (like we did for our writing scrapbook) and stick the A4 page on the front

Write “My Confirmation Scrapbook 2020” on the cover and decorate it.

There is a lot of work in designing the cover so you can complete it over the next few weeks.

There are some images in the downloads for inspiration.

Time Capsule Activity

Write a letter to yourself ten years from now.

This is the first item we are asking you to complete for the time capsule.

We would like you to reflect on this experience and think about the future.

We will hold on to your letter until 2030 for you!

Your letter should include

  1. Greeting “Dear future me, “
  2. Opening – Reason for contact
  3. Main message you would like to convey, e.g. What you would like to remember from this time. What you hope you will achieve by 2030 (college, job, travel etc.)
  4. Include some questions and how they might respond e.g. What is technology like in the future? What will the world be like?
  5. Greeting and farewell.
