5th Class Room 11- Monday 18th May 2020

17th May 2020

Hello fifth class,

Monday marks the beginning of Phase 1 in the Governments roadmap to ease Covid-19 restrictions.

Most of the changes in Phase one will make little difference to your lives, however, it is the beginning of the end of the lockdown. It is exciting to think that we all be able to see our friends and family very, very, soon.

Last week we introduced a Photograph Challenge – I hope that you are having lots of fun taking the photographs. Get your photos in to me by Friday!

This week we are introducing our School Time Capsule for 5th and 6th Class.

time capsule is a container that holds present day items, such as photos, newspapers, letters and more. It's typically hidden away for your future self or someone of your choosing to open.

Each week we will set a task for you to complete.

Keep the activities safe. We will organise to collect your work from you in June.

All the work, along with your photographs will be put together in a School Time Capsule to be hidden away by Mrs. Andrews until 2030.

Each one of you will be invited back to Time Capsule opening. It will be an exciting event as everyone looks back on this time and sees how far they have all come.

Thank you for sending me lots of emails with your photographs and work, it really makes my day to see your hard work! I am so proud of each and every one of you for sticking with the work and I know that you will continue to give 100% until June 26th!

Have a great week,

Mrs. Kealy

There is an extract from Holes Chapter 45 on page 56 of your Word Wizard. Look at the words in bold writing and then complete activity C on page 57 in your copy.

Palindromes

“Stanley Yelnats” is a palindrome, spelled the same both forward and backward. Other palindromes include the words mom, radar, and racecar, and the names Elle, Anna, and Otto.

Whole phrases can be palindromes, too, such as “A daffodil slid off Ada” and “Rats live on no evil star.”

Come up with some palindromes of your own, or make your name into a palindrome.

Maths

Interactive online activity - make the amount using the least amount of coins.

http://data.cjfallon.ie/resources/20707/BAM5_Tutorial_033/lessons/BAM5_Tutorial_033/index.html

  1. Finding the cost of a number of items

To do this you must multiply the cost of one item €17.50 X 11

Rule when multiplying a decimal – multiply first and then put in the decimal point

  Example

€17.50 (2 numbers after the decimal)

   x      11

       1750

 +  17500 (don’t forget the 0 when x10)

     19250

Count the number of decimal places in the question – there are two

Ans = €192.50

Do Planet Maths Pg 114 C

2. Unitary Method (This means finding the value, cost or size of one unit)

Example 7 apples cost €2.66

        7 |€2.66

            €0.38

Ans = 1 apple cost €0.38

Do: Planet Maths pg. 115 A & B

Maths Challenge: You can work at your own pace in Maths Challenge for the rest of the year. You can do one a week, one a day – it’s up to you!

Parental Involvement (Money)

Children should be able to compare items in terms of value for money, for example: which is better value, 3 tins of beans for €1·83 or 6 tins for €2·99?

There are many contexts where children should be able to apply this process to in the home, e.g. comparing value on broadband packages, on mobile phone tariffs and on holidays.

Independent Project.

Over the next two weeks we will be doing a project on a topic of your choice.

You can choose to do your project on either

  1. A person you admire (e.g. a famous sports person, a person from history, an author).
  2. A hobby you are interested in e.g. a sport or a game

You learned about report writing with Miss. Clohessy. The purpose of the project is to present factual information to the reader.

Your project should include:

  • An introduction: A definition or a short description of the person/ hobby
  • A detailed description of all the sub-headings.
  • A conclusion: A summary of the topic or an impersonal comment
  • You can include fact boxes, a timeline, a labelled diagram, a glossary of vocabulary, a graph or table.

Here are some sub-headings you could use for a person

  1. Early- life
  2. Achievement
  3. Later life and/or their influence

Here are some sub-headings you could use for a hobby

  1. History/ origins of the activity e.g. when/ where/ how did it begin
  2. The activity today e.g. how many people take part, competitions, has the activity changed
  3. Famous people who take part e.g. famous camogie players

Look at page 66 and page 72 of your Word Wizard to revise the features of report writing.

Steps

  1. Research your person or hobby using the internet, books etc.
  2. Use your research to complete a mind map for your chosen person or hobby. (see pg 66 Word Wizard).
  3. Using the information in your mind map writ your first draft in your own words.
You can present your project as a booklet or put 2/3 sheets together to present it as a poster.

Time Capsule Activity

Write a letter to yourself ten years from now.

This is the first item we are asking you to complete for the time capsule.

We would like you to reflect on this experience and think about the future.

We will hold on to your letter until 2030 for you!

Your letter should include

  1. Greeting “Dear future me, “
  2. Opening – Reason for contact
  3. Main message you would like to convey, e.g. What you would like to remember from this time. What you hope you will achieve by 2030 (college, job, travel etc.)
  4. Include some questions and how they might respond e.g. What is technology like in the future? What will the world be like?
  5. Greeting and farewell.
