2nd Class Work - 11-15 May
Hello girls !
I hope you and your families are well. Here is your work for the week ahead. Please do not worry if you don't get it all done. Just do your best. I've been out and about on my bike this week (picture below with Gemma). We are lucky to have a bog nearby that you can cycle all around. There are lots of wildflowers and plants to watch out for too along the way. I've also went back to baking and my most recent bake was red velvet cupcakes with a white chocolate cream cheese frosting! See you again next week and don't forget to email me pictures of you out and about or of your fantastic work !! My email address is rpowercashelgirls@gmail.com

Girls, I am sure you are reading lots. π I would love to know what books you are reading!! If you haven’t many books at home, log onto this website for lots of lovely online books https://www.oxfordowl.co.uk/for-home/find-a-book/library-page/
Some of you did a readers’ theatre of ‘Sleeping Ugly’, I’ve included it below should you wish to read it at home. You can divide up the parts and ask those at home to join you in a reading or read all the parts yourself. Don’t forget to use great expression !! π
Writing
Do you remember the fun we had talking about how to make a jam sandwich? You told me to put the knife in the jam but the lid was still on! π π It’s important to get the steps right! Think of a procedure you might like to write. Fill in the worksheet below or use the worksheet to help you lay your procedure out nicely in your copy. Ideas might be ‘How to make hot chocolate’, ‘How to make pancakes’, ‘How to play hopscotch’. When you’re done, ask somebody to test your procedure!
How to make a peanut butter sandwich! Remember this family?! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ct-lOOUqmyY&t=71s

MATHS
MENTAL MATHS: Continue to complete a panel of your mental maths book every day. Don’t forget the word problem !!
TABLES: Keep practicing your tables, do 6+ and 7+ this week. See how many 6+ or 7+ tables you can write in 2 minutes !
NEW: Two-Step Maths Problems
Here, you need to do two sums to find the answer to a maths problem. Have a look at this example below;
Mary had 10 balloons. Jane gave Mary 10 balloons more. Later, seven of the balloons popped. How many balloons had Mary then?
So, first you must find out how many balloons Mary had in total. So, 10+10 = 20.
Then you are told that seven of them burst. So, 20-7 = 13. How many balloons had Mary at the end? 13 !
See the maths problems and further worksheets attached.
If you'd like to create some two-step maths problems for your classmates, email them to me and I will add them to next week's work !!
Also, if you did the maths mystery last week, Yan was the palace gingerbread eater !!!! Did you solve the mystery?!
Parents, Khan Academy is a good website for practicing maths skills, register for free at
Go to www.topmarks.co.uk to play lots of fun and educational games and many are tablet-friendly.
Like a maths challenge?! Super Sleuth is for you ! It starts off easy but gets trickier further on !! :)
GEOGRAPHY
So far this year we have learned all about the country of Spain.
Now it’s time to learn all about a very unique country in Africa called Ethiopia !!!!
Firstly, take a look at the Powerpoint Presentation below. Then check out the following videos I found;
Great video telling us about lots of different aspects of Ethiopia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=klYl6MUYmuc
Catchy song telling us more about Ethiopia https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ud2OmhgdiHk&vl=en
Traditional Ethiopian Dance – it’s all in the shoulders ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9Sap_AGihE
Enjoy some of Ted Afro’s music https://open.spotify.com/album/4EVEPI1V6dWOEw2wN1ghmJ?si=J6NnywOrQIiu44myPqIH0Q
The Black Lion is native to Ethiopia. It has a black mane and that's where it gets it's name. I've included some mindfulness colouring below.
Next week, we will write some facts about Ethiopia and find out a little about a girl called Muluken and her life in Ethiopia.

SCIENCE
Environmental Awareness & Care - Recycling
Recycling our rubbish is very important in protecting our environment. It is important to recycle our rubbish as much as possible. Have a look at this video to refresh your recycling knowledge. Create posters to put near your bins so everyone knows what goes in what bin ! Or do a rubbish pick-up around your house!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlRVPum9cp4
Try this experiment: Fill a basin with some water. Put a tissue into a clean jar. Plunge the jar slowly and steadily into the basin of water. Lift the jar back out of the water quickly. See what happens!
ART IDEAS
Friday the 15th May is International Day of Families. We are lucky to be able to spend so much time with our families. Why not draw a picture of your family, maybe you could draw or paint your family in Picasso style, design a poster with lots of great adjectives describing your family, paint a rock for each member of your family, make a special card for your family, the list is endless !
Make something very cool and unusual from items in your recycling bin.
